After I develop a strong concept for a product that answers a real need (otherwise the idea is discarded), I sketch multiple variations and details of it. Dimensions and proportions are tweaked in CAD drawings (Computer Aided Design).
Whenever possible, I build prototypes myself and refine them in my workshop. I believe making full scale working prototypes is one of the best ways to see what works and where improvement is necessary.
After a first prototype is finished, I invite feedback from family, friends, and shops. I return to my tools and build another prototype. More feedback, more prototypes until I feel the design fulfills the many requirements of a good product: pleasing aesthetics, great function, easy enough to manufacture in order to reach a good quality level and to be within budget, a better solution compared to existing products, durable, small packaging, the list goes on... Finally, technical drawings are double checked, updated where necessary, reflecting the final version.

The next step is sourcing and comparing manufacturing partners. Then onto prototyping, mould making, and finally, seeing through the first production run.
It’s an exciting and equally challenging process, to go from an idea to a mass produced quality product. |
Experience
Long before starting HELLER-STUDIO, I trained as a toolmaker in Germany. I still cherish the experience of these 3 years training in a factory that makes machines to produce gears. Directly after finishing my apprenticeship I worked for a Swiss company in Japan maintaining precision stamping tools, for 2 years.
At Ravensbourne College, UK, I studied furniture and product design, followed by work at cabinetmakers, architectural model makers, and exhibition design companies.
Then I started designing & making one-off furniture and lighting.

A move to China followed, working for 6 years as product manager and in-house designer for a German trading company in Shanghai. Another 2 years I worked in a similar role in a Chinese company.
My hands-on working experience helped me solve quality issues at factories and develop new products that still sell successfully. |
Fun Stuff
When I am not designing and working on my business, I can be found windsurfing (not often enough), swimming or snorkelling at tropical reefs. Another passion of mine is energy healing and staying balanced with regular meditation. Family and friends share an equally important part of my life.
